COURSE SELECTION OVERVIEW FOR RETURNING STUDENTS (NON-IB)

(CLASSES OF 2020, 2021 & 2022)

The Basic Academy Counseling Department Course Selection (PreRegistration) process is designed to make the task of selecting classes for the following school year as streamlined and efficient as possible. It is recommended that all students & parents follow the steps outlined in this process as closely as possible in order to maintain that intended efficiency and to minimize the chance of issues or errors. The overall process is as follows:

  1. Students will be provided a Course Selection Worksheet (specific to their grade level) via their English classes. This worksheet is intended to act as a "rough draft" before the course selections are officially submitted.

  2. Students (and their parents) make their choices, using the Course Catalog as a reference, and complete the worksheet.

  3. After completing the worksheet, students access an online Course Selection Submission Form and enter their selections from their worksheet to the form for submission to their counselor.

  4. After the Course Selection period has passed, students will have a Face to Face Meeting with their counselor to review their selections and finalize their Course Selection process.

It is highly recommended that parents be actively involved in the selection of their students classes. Any questions related to the process or regarding any specific course should be directed to the student's counselor. Please see our Counseling Home page for contact information.

COURSE SELECTION TIMELINE

Students will be provided their Course Selection Worksheets in their English classes on DATE TBD. Additional worksheets are accessible further down this page.

The online Course Selection Submission Forms will be active for a two-week period from DATES TBD. Students must submit their course selections via their designated form at some point within this time window.

FACE TO FACE MEETINGS

Shortly after the submission window has closed, Basic Academy counselors will begin the process of meeting with each student to review their course selections, address any issues/concerns and finalize the process. These meetings will take place during a student's English class and will be done by grade level over the course of several weeks. The timeline for these Face to Face meetings is as follows:

  • This year's Juniors (Class of 2020) -- February 11th through 22nd

  • This year's Sophomores (Class of 2021) -- February 25th through March 8th

  • This year's Freshmen (Class of 2022) -- March 11th through 21st

 

INCOMING FRESHMEN (CLASS OF 2023)

Basic Academy counselors will be making site visits to our feeder middle schools as part of the pre-registration process for incoming freshmen (Class of 2023) during the week of February 4th - 8th. Parents of those middle school students should direct questions to the counseling staff at their respective middle schools. The site visit schedule will be as follows:

  • 2/4 - Cortney Middle School

  • 2/5 - Burkholder Middle School

  • 2/6 - Brown Middle School

  • 2/7 or 2/8 - White Middle School

REDUCED CLASS LOAD/OPEN PERIODS FOR SENIORS

It is strongly encouraged that all students considering post-secondary education enroll into a full class schedule. However, Seniors at Basic Academy who are on track to graduate are permitted to petition for a reduced class load and enroll in less than eight classes (aka "Open Periods"). Nevada State Law dictates that students must be enrolled in a minimum of four classes.

 

NOTE! Students with open periods are not permitted to be on campus during their open periods and they must provide their own transportation to/from school during those times. Students that ride a CCSD bus to/from school are not eligible to have open periods.

 

To apply for Open Periods, students must print out the Request for Reduced Class Load Form and bring it with them (signed by themselves and a parent) to the Face to Face meeting with their counselor for inclusion into their course selections.

 

STEP 1 – COMPLETE THE COURSE SELECTION WORKSHEET

Course Selection Worksheets were distributed to students on DATE TBD. Additional copies can be downloaded/printed using the links below. Parents and students should also make use of the 2019-20 Course Catalog (link below) as a reference tool. The catalog contains a substantial amount of information such as full course descriptions, course fees, graduation requirements and information about many other policies at Basic Academy.

STEP 2 – DIGITALLY SUBMIT THE COURSE SELECTIONS VIA THE ONLINE FORM

Once the Course Selection Worksheet has been completed, students need to officially submit their choices. This will be accomplished through the use of an online Google form (Course Selection Submission Form). There is a form for each grade level and it is critical that students use the correct one.

 

To submit course selections, students should click on the button below that corresponds to their grade level. NOTE: As a form of identity verification, students must be logged into their school Google account in order to access the submission form. Students who do not know their CCSD Google credentials, can see any of their teachers for assistance.

 

 

In order to minimize duplicate and/or redundant submissions, students can only submit their Course Selections ONCE! Therefore, it is critical that students have their Worksheet completed fully before submitting their selections.

 

If a student wishes to change a course choice after the form has been submitted, they should write the change onto their Course Selection Worksheet and have it with them during the subsequent face to face meeting with their counselor.

STEP 3 – FINALIZE COURSE SELECTIONS WITH COUNSELOR

After the submission window has closed, Basic Academy counselors will begin the process of meeting with each student to review their course selections, address any issues/concerns and finalize the process. If you are not logged into your CCSD Google account when you try to access the form, an "Access Denied" message will come up. Login to your school Google account first!

Use the Worksheet as your "rough draft" to build the list of classes you want.
